Lalibela

You will have photos to back up your stories of Lalibela majesty. Here in the rugged Lasta Mountains, ‘Africa’s Petra’, a world heritage sites & undoubtedly ranks among the greatest religio-historical sites in the Christian world.

Any Lalibela Holiday’s mainly focus on the magnificent medieval rock-hewn churches, dimly lit passageways, hidden crypts and grottoes, was carved down into the red volcanic rock underlying this remote Ethiopian town almost a millennia ago. Today that world still remains, frozen in stone.

Descend into the tunnels and pass traditional priests and monks who float through the confines like the clouds of incense, smell beeswax candles and hear the sounds of chanting coming from the deep, cool recesses, only to find yourself standing in the sunlight, slack-jawed and staring up to a structure that defies reason.
To mention few of this churches in your Lalibela Tours, Bete Medhane Alem, home to the Lalibela Cross & believed to be the largest monolithic church in the world. It is linked to Bete Maryam (possibly the oldest of the churches), Bete Giyorgis, the most finely executed and best preserved church, Bete Amanuel, Bete Gabriel-Rufael….and can be extended to several other churches in the vicinity: including the beautiful built up cave church of Yimrehane Kristos (from 11th century), Genete MaryamAshetan Maryam and Much More .

Best time to visit Lalibela is at TIMKET (Ethiopian Epiphany in January 19) a vivid ritual unfolds before the spectator: here the dances of the priests take place after the annual repetition of mass baptism in the river Jordan.
