The most regularly visited volcanic range in the Danakil , which consists of seven active peaks extending over an area of 2350 km square between Kebit Ale (287m, on the west shore of lake Asale) to HaileGubbi (521m, about 20 km north of Lake Afrera) . Of the three peaks that top the 600m mark, most remarkable is Erta Ale itself, which is noted as being one of the most active volcanoes in Africa, having hosted a permanent lava lake for longer than 120 years , and which has been in a state of continuous eruption since at least 1967, when scientific observation commenced.
Erta ale Ear marked by the Afar Regional government as the centerpiece of a forthcoming ‘crater national park’, Erta Ale Ranks as one of the most alluring-and physically challenging- natural attractions anywhere in Ethiopia Rising from below sea level to an altitude of 613m. Erta Ale is a shield volcano with a base diameter of 30 km and a 1 km square caldera at its summit. Nestles within the caldera are two pit craters: the larger , more northerly one , though currently inactive, held a lava lake in 1968 and 1973, while the smaller ellipsoid central pit contains the world’s only permanent lava lake, which measures about 60m across and is 100 m long. Despite gentle slopes, a night-time hike to its summit for sunrise is a captivating as it’s exhausting. Taking camels is a viable option.
Erta Ale means Smoking Mountain according to the local Afar Language. Normally, the caravan is taking of late afternoon and will travel the whole night with some stops. Along the route, while walking at night, one can admire the reflection of the volcanic lave that frequently erupts from the Crater Lake situated on the hill 613 meters high. The journey, walking on strange but amusing extensive dry lava feels like walking on the moon.
