ETHIOPIA HISTORIC ROUTE & HARAR TOUR ITINERARY: ON SURFACE (4 by 4) - 17 DAYS
Day 1: Upon arrival in Addis Ababa, You will be greeted with the company representative at the airport and transferred to the hotel. (Depending on your arrival time we can arrange afternoon or after hour city tour)
Day 2: Addis- Debre Markos. (300 km takes 6 hours).
Drive to Debre Markos via Dejen (the famous are for growing Teff),On the way visit the 13th century monastery of Debre Libanos, and driving via The Blue Nile Gorge which is compared to Grand Canyon and the Oromo people and their village. Overnight Hotel.
Day 3: Debre Markos-Bahir Dar . (265 km)
Drive to Bahir Dar, through the beautiful scenery and meet the Amhara people & their villages and, on the way visit Zengena Crater Lake. In the afternoon drive some 35 km to visit the Blue Nile falls locally known as Tis Isat ‘the water that smokes’. The falls throws up a continuous spry of water droplets which drench onlookers. The area around the river is extremely fertile and the Amhara people who live here farm wheat, Sorgum and Teff (from which injera, the national bread (pancake), is made). Overnight Hotel
Day 4: Bahir Dar.
Am boat trip over Lake Tana and visit the 14th century monasteries on island such as Ura Kidanemihret and Kibran Gabriel. PM we make city tour of Bahir Dar that includes: colorful market where someone could find the pottery, traditional hand-made woven clothes..etc and Mount Bezawit where the palace of Emperor Haile Selassie is gracefully situated with its best viewing point for the town, the lakes and the river. Day 5: Bahirdar –Gondor: (180 km)
Drive to Gondar Over wide grazing land hilly mountains with numerous farmlands. The rest of the day visit attractions in Gondor that includes: Castles of Gondor that included in the world Heritage List, the royal Fasiledes Bath and the Church of Debre Berhan Selassie with its unique murals. Overnight Hotel
Day 6: Gondor- Semien Mountain National Park (122 km)
Drive to Semien mountain Park, to wonder the spectacular scenery, see endemic Gelada Baboons and the bone breaker giant bird Lammergeyer roaring around and Hiking on the escarpment (optional). Overnight Semien Lodge.
Day 7: Semien Mountain- Axum (280 km takes 7 hours)
Drive to Axum alongside a beautiful and spectacular landscape of the Semien Mountains and Tekeze Gorge. The road descends from 3100 meters through hairpin bends down the mountain side to 1400 meters with in 40 km, the drive down and back up, show cases not only the immensely Semien mountain Massifs but also the people who eke out an existence in this unforgiving countryside. Day 8: Axum
Full day in Axum, visit the archeological and historical sites that includes the archaeological museum, monolithic steles, the tombs of Kings, and the bath and ruins palace of the Legendary Queen of Sheba and the new and old Cathedral of St. Mary of Tsion (Zion) church, the final resting place of the Ark of the Covenant. Overnight Hotel
Day 9: Axum- Mekele (260 Km)
Drive to Mekele, through the historical town of Adwa, which is the major battle field took place and drive to the 1st known capital town of Yeha to visit the 5th century B.C. imposing ruins of Yeha’s temple. It was a large pre-christian temple consisting of a single oblong chamber, the oldest Mosque and Muslim settlement of Nejash , Meet the Tigrian People with their village and the rock hewn church of Wukro Cherkos. Overnight hotel.
Day 10: Mekele-Lalibela. (360 km)
Eight hours drive to Lalibela through the beautiful mountain scenery and meet the Amhara people and their village. Hotel
Day 11: Lalibela
Full day in Lalibela visit the remarkable rock hewn churches of Lalibela, regarded as the eighth wonder of the world by many scholars and the traditional two story Tikul house. Hotel.
Day 12: Lalibela
Excursion tour to see the churches found outside Lalibela such as Yimirhane Kirstos church and either Asheton Mariam or Nakuto la’ab church. Overnight Hotel
Day 13: Lalibela-Kombolcha (320 km)
Drive to Kombolcha through fantastic scenery and mountain ranges all along the way. Visit the 13th century Haik Istifanos Monastery. Overnight Hotel.
Day 14: Kombolcha - Awash
Drive to Awash National Park the best game viewing reserve in Ethiopia. Overnight Hotel
Day 15: Awash - Harar
After breakfast drive from Awash Sebat Killo to Harar. We will be driving through the Hararghe Mountains and we will see plenty of coffee and ‘chat’ fields. The region is well known in growing one of the best qualities of coffee in the country. Finally we will arrive in Harar early in the afternoon. Overnight hotel
Day 16: Harar
The same day you visit the colorful Muslim and Christian markets (known for basketry), the museum, and the traditional Hararie houses situated within the famous walled city. In the evening visit the hyena man while he feeds the hungry hyenas (wonderful experience). Overnight Hotel
Day 17: Drive to Addis Ababa Evening departure
After breakfast we drive back to Addis Ababa. Evening we will have a fare well dinner in one of the Ethiopian restaurants for cultural dinner and dances from the different ethnic groups. Then after transfer to the airport for flight back home.
